Most all of us have tried dieting at one time or another and realize the importance of controlling your appetite. When you are dieting, the last thing in the world you need to feel is hungry. This is most likely the number one reason for so many of us to experience failure to maintain our diets. We will be discussing various methods you can use to control your hunger and feel satisfied.

Your appetite – in large part – is controlled by the types of food you consume. Starches and sugars are not only high in calories, but they also what are known as short-chain carbohydrates that are quickly converted into glucose. How does your body react when you eat these types of carbs? Your blood glucose rises quickly and dramatically and, just as quickly, it can drop extremely low leaving you with the feeling that you have to eat something again. If you eat more protein and healthy carbs, which includes whole grains and vegetables, your blood sugar will remain more stable throughout the day, so you won’t want to eat as much. If you learn how to read the glycemic index (GI), you will see which foods can cause these dramatic upswings and downswings in your blood sugar. Foods with a lower GI are absorbed more slowly and cause less of a spike in your blood sugar. You can curb your appetite sometimes by eating. The fact is that if you wait too long in between meals, your blood sugar levels can go awry causing you to want to eat more food to balance it out. To accomplish this, you need to avoid large meals and eat many small ones throughout the day. It is important to not snack haphazardly as this will cause you to gain weight instead of lose it. To keep hunger at bay, you need to eat small nutritious meals throughout the day on a regular basis. If you want to lose weight, always eat healthy snacks like carrots or fruit that are great choices if you are hungry.

What we consume for our lunch should be considered more than just a quickie meal and should consist of healthy foods. If you typically go out for lunch, either to a fast food place, takeout deli or perhaps a diner, you’re probably eating lots of unhealthy carbs and other high calorie items. A lot of these have been cooked in grease or oil and have huge levels of salt and sugar; which cause your to want them more than ever. When you opt for a healthy meal that has fresh greens, with a low calorie dressing and some lean protein; your appetite will be appeased. As a result of switching to a healthy diet such as this, you will be giving you body a gift.

The foods we eat are fattening, and get worse in their salt or sugar content. On top of this, if we don’t exercise enough, our metabolism slows down and it’s harder to burn off calories. Your appetite can be tamed with these healthier eating habits.
